Case Studies
- A Chartered Accountant in general practice was targeted for prosecution by
the Inland Revenue. The investigators were convinced that major tax irregularities
had occurred in his private tax affairs and those of his clients. He faced imprisonment
and financial ruin. Inland Revenue Chartered Accountants produced reports purporting
to demonstrate the alleged irregularities. We refuted the Revenue's reports and
achieved financial settlement of the case on minor adjustments.
- We were approached at short notice by a client who was involved in both matrimonial
proceedings and an SCO investigation simultaneously. His current advisors had
declared themselves to be "out of their depth" with only a short while
to go before a Court deadline for the matrimonial proceedings. We were required
to produce a report for the Court quantifying the likely tax settlement. In only
two weeks we produced a report which would normally have taken months. The quality
was so high that our findings were accepted fully by the other side. We went on
to complete the Hansard disclosure report for the Inland Revenue.
- We assisted in a VAT review which resulted in a leading insurance company
receiving a VAT repayment in excess of £900,000.
- A subcontractor was the subject of a prosecution investigation by the SCO.
We persuaded them to drop the prosecution and take a financial settlement.
- A vehicle hire operator engaged us in a dispute with Customs & Excise
over the deductibility of VAT on legal fees. Customs eventually conceded at the
steps of the Tribunal, saving our client £25,000 VAT - and Customs paid
all our costs!
- A UK business which had dealings with a foreign company was the subject of
a CODE 8 SCO investigation. The Revenue contended that the UK business was an
agent for the non resident company. We successfully argued against this, saving
the UK business over £1m in the process.
- A well respected company, on implementing a supplier review, discovered that
a consultant who had charged them over £20,000 in VAT over a 2 year period
was not actually registered for VAT and was now trying to claim employment status.
We represented the company and obtained Customs' agreement that the VAT claimed
would not be disallowed.
- A dental partnership approached us to take over the conduct of a Hansard investigation
which had become bogged down. They were using a "Big 4" firm and were
totally dissatisfied with the service and charges. We took over the stalemated
negotiations and rapidly took the matter forward to a favourable settlement.
- A taxi company was under investigation by Customs & Excise for failure
to register for VAT. We took control of the enquiry and established a considerably
lower figure of tax owed than the client expected. This was accepted by Customs
& Excise, a heavily discounted penalty negotiated, and payment by instalment
over several months agreed.
- We were approached by aggrieved minority shareholders in connection with Court
proceedings. We produced an expert witness report within four working days setting
out various taxation liabilities and were subsequently engaged to represent them
in making disclosures to the Authorities.
- We deal with dozens of local Tax District investigations of all types and
sizes. Leading fee protection insurers use us because of the quality of our work
and the value for money we deliver.
We also offer fee protection insurance and are expert advisors to leading insurers.
