Tax Courts
For many people, the thought of going to court is something they do not contemplate readily, and when it comes to taking on HMRC, most taxpayers, and their regular advisers, will think twice, with good cause. Whilst it is unlikely that the “taxman will come and get them” for doing so, as many taxpayers believe, it is true that HMRC has deep pockets, knows the system well, and is not, as a general rule, an efficient litigator, despite having its own Solicitor’s office.
For the taxpayer’s regular adviser the main issues are that taking a tax appeal is pretty unfamiliar territory, there is a real concern that the relationship with the particular tax inspector could be damaged, and, where Tax Counsel is needed, they may not be as familiar with the particular skills of specific counsel as they would like to be.
We are experts at handling tax litigation work. We work with the client and the regular advisers, to bring the appeal to the tribunal, instructing tax counsel as appropriate and, where required, act as the taxpayer’s representative, thus handling all of the domestics related to the appeal. Our knowledge of the system means that we achieve value for money on professional charges, enable the regular advisor to manage the needs of other clients, and the client to get on with running his business and his life.
We know the trepidation which most taxpayers feel when faced with appearing within the tax courts. We understand this and provide a personal service that supports the client throughout the process and seek wherever possible to reduce the stress.
The advice we are asked to provide covers many other areas.
